CHAPTER 9

TORI

“It’s girls’ night!” Avery calls out as she stands in her open doorway, watching me as I walk off the elevator and down the hall to her condo. She lives right next door to Ryker, hence how they met and are now an item.

“Bring it on, bestie!” I holler as I hold up the bottle of wine I have in one hand and the takeout bag in the other. “Is Ellie joining us?” I ask as I walk into her place.

“She ditched us for her best friend. They’re having a sleepover at her friend’s house tonight. Last weekend was here; this weekend is there. I have a feeling they will just keep switching back and forth all year.”

“Sounds like a good plan, so with no young ears around, it’s time for you to dish.” I give her a pointed look.

“Me? I need all the juicy details about you and Aiden.” She gives me a pointed look right back. “I’ve got the channel on; the game feed should start any minute now. They don’t always show the warm-ups, but they usually at least have it in the background while the TV people talk endlessly about stats and other games going on around the league.”

“Before we start gabbing or sit down to watch the game, I need some food, so let’s eat,” I suggest. I had a rushed lunch today and didn’t get to eat much during my break.

I set out the containers from a local Chinese place around the block. I ordered a big family meal deal they have, as it includes all Avery and my favorites. We do this occasionally, and it gives us food to gorge on all night long as we sit up and gab, do our nails and some skin treatments, or just sit around and drink wine and eat our weight in Chinese food.

“God, this is so good.” Avery moans as she bites into a crab Rangoon.

“I know. So good!” I exclaim as I take a bite of the cashew chicken. It is probably my ultimate favorite dish they have, and that is saying something because I love just about everything they serve.

We take our full plates and wine glasses with us to the living room, getting comfortable on the couch. Just as we sit down, the channel starts the feed of the Shockwaves game. The national anthem is being sung by some up-and-coming newbie singer I’ve heard of in the last few months. She’s pretty good; young, but good. I can only hope the industry doesn’t ruin her like it has so many other young women.

Once the anthem is done, the lights come back on, and the camera pans out to show the guys skating around a bit, as well as panning the length of both benches, showing all the players as they take their spots and wait for the puck to drop.

I watch in amazement as the two guys line up at center ice, each placing their sticks ever so perfectly on either side of the circle painted in the middle.
